Rudník: Basket-Weaving Tradition and Paths Through the Hilly Landscape

Rudník extends across numerous hamlets and kopanitsas on the slopes and in the valleys of the Myjava Hills in the White Carpathians. Basket weaving has a long tradition in the village, and to this day there is a company there that manufactures and processes wicker products. There are also paths through the forest and hilly landscape, as well as the first written mention of Rudník, dating from 1661.

Culture and Crafts

At Nevšedné podoby prútia, visitors can learn about new weaving techniques and tools. The extraction and preparation of willow rods are also among the topics covered; there is also an opportunity to exchange experiences. The event is one of the most significant cultural events in Rudník. For the 2026 edition, basket-weaving workshops, presentations of weaving techniques, a basketware market, films about basket weaving, an exhibition of basketry, and an accompanying cultural programme had been announced. The written history of the village begins with the first mention of Rudník in 1661. Historical occupations included blacksmithing, a mill, the production of vegetable oil known as záboje, as well as weaving, embroidery, lace-making, and the manufacture of wooden products. There is also a living willow tunnel in the park by the cultural centre. Especially during the summer months, children use it for playing and as protection from the hot sun.

Nature and Educational Trail

The NCH Poriadie–Rudník educational trail is 2.284 km long and has three information stations about the nature, fauna, and flora of the Myjava Hills. It begins in the centre of Rudník and leads north through the Skalky forest. It ends at Poriadie railway station, where the educational trail towards Stará Myjava begins. This connects the village centre, forest section, nature topics, and the link to another trail within a short route.

Cycling Routes and Connections

Cycle routes from Rudník lead to surrounding municipalities and to natural, cultural, and historical monuments. Cyclists also use the local roads in Rudník, which connect the surrounding municipalities with one another.

Getting There

Rudník has regular bus connections to Myjava, Stará Turá, and Vaďovce. There is no operating rail service in the village. The nearest railway stations are in Poriadie and Myjava.
