Stará Myjava: Nature, Cycling Routes and Cultural Sites
Part of the cadastral area of Stará Myjava lies within the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. At the same time, the protected area of the Myjava River, which has been designated a natural monument, also includes the municipality’s cadastral area. Thus, Stará Myjava brings together protected landscapes, a reservoir and marked trails with historic memorial sites and seasonal events.
Nature and Bodies of Water
The Stará Myjava Reservoir was built on the Myjava River within the municipality’s cadastral area. A forestry educational trail on its shore features nine information boards. Another educational trail in the Slovak-Moravian border region has nine information stations about the natural treasures, fauna and flora of the Myjava Hills and the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. This longest educational trail in the Slovak-Moravian border region is 18.298 kilometres long and runs along existing field and forest paths.
The reservoir is used for swimming, boating, sunbathing and fishing. Alongside the protected landscapes, this gives the locality a body of water with the various uses mentioned above. The connection between the river, reservoir, hills and forest paths remains closely linked to the cadastral area of Stará Myjava.
Cycling Routes and Winter Routes
The Staromyjavská Greenway is a 15.3-kilometre, blue-marked cycling route rated “Recreation” in difficulty. It connects Myjava, Brestovec, Kadlecovci and Stará Myjava and leads to the Stará Myjava Reservoir. Another route is the Krivosudy cycling route. It leads to the SNP Monument and restored partisan bunkers from the Second World War, then continues through the forest above Skiland Stará Myjava.
A winter route is also explicitly linked to Stará Myjava: the Novolhotsko–staromyjavský cross-country ski trail is 12.6 kilometres long, runs through Stará Myjava and is connected to the Czech Republic. The different route lengths, markings and paths make the routes recognisable as independent components of the locality’s profile.
Winter Sports
Skiland Stará Myjava is a ski resort in the White Carpathians. Its facilities include artificial snowmaking, night skiing, ski and snowboard equipment rental, a ski service, parking within the resort and a buffet. The gentle slope at Skiland Stará Myjava is suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers.
History and Culture
Restored underground partisan bunkers can be found in Stará Myjava. They commemorate the founding of the II Stalin Partisan Brigade and the 1944 Slovak National Uprising. Together with the SNP Monument, which lies along the Krivosudy cycling route, they are among the historic sites visible along the routes described.
The cultural event “Vítanie jari” is scheduled to take place in Stará Myjava in April. The event “Degustácia páleného” is also scheduled for April; it is a tasting of distilled spirits.
