Nature

The character of the settlement is shaped by its distinctive form: Nová Bošáca is a Kopanitsa municipality with settlements scattered across the slopes of the Bošácko Valley. The natural monuments also demonstrate the diversity of the area. The Bestinné Natural Monument protects grasslands containing several endangered plant species; the fourth level of protection applies there. The Blažejová Natural Monument preserves a valuable meadow community with rare and endangered plants, spring fens, adjacent orchid meadows and hay meadows; the fourth level of protection applies there as well.

The protected natural heritage also includes the Grúň Natural Monument, with valuable meadow, forest and pasture communities and a rich occurrence of orchids, as well as the Lopeníček Natural Monument. It protects one of the most species-rich sites of the endangered species common green-winged orchid (Orchis morio). The fourth level of protection applies to both natural monuments. The Mravcové Natural Monument protects a valuable spring tufa refuge for orchid species and invertebrates; the fourth level of protection applies here too.

The landscape can also be explored via designated routes. The 58-kilometre Novohorská cycling route runs through Nová Bošáca–Šiance to the border with the Czech Republic. The Veľký Lopeník observation tower can be reached from Nová Bošáca via a 5-kilometre-long blue-marked route.

Culture and Tradition

A visible part of local cultural life is the Roman Catholic subsidiary Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Nová Bošáca. It was built between 1969 and 1971 and consecrated on 14 September 1971. The subsidiary church serves as a spiritual centre for the faithful of the municipality and its surroundings. It houses art-historically valuable works by National Artist Vincent Hložník.

The memorial in the Grúň settlement is part of the local culture of remembrance. It consists of a statue and a mass grave of fallen Soviet soldiers, was unveiled in 1945 and is now a national cultural monument.

The traditional culture of the Bošácko Valley has been preserved particularly in oral folklore, family and seasonal customs, cuisine and traditional dress. The festive women’s clothing of the Sellácky tradition consists of four basic parts: “rubáč”, “rukávce”, “okolek” as the back apron and “záscere” as the front apron. Traditional festive men’s clothing of the Sellácky tradition from the Bošácko Valley comprises a shirt, “gate” or “gace”, trousers, a waistcoat called “prucel” and a hat called “brúsek”.

The local history of craftsmanship is associated with woodcarver Štefan Matejík, who represented Nová Bošáca through his 50-year artistic career.

Cuisine

Regional cuisine is also part of the valley’s traditional heritage. In Nová Bošáca, the tradition of producing the famous Bošácka slivovica continues to this day.
