Culture and History

The Púchov culture is dated from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD; its heyday was in the 1st century AD. The Župný dom is a Baroque-Classical building that Imrich Marczibányi had constructed at the end of the 18th century and that was originally used as a salt warehouse and administrative building. The Museum of Púchov Culture is located in the Župný dom. The exhibition includes selected archaeological artefacts such as fibulae, a neck-ring mould, parts of axes, spears, a javelin, a knife, as well as smaller tools and implements.

The memorial parish church on Moravská ulica was built in 1904 and was the place of work of the Slovak poet and evangelical pastor Vladimír Roy from 1911 to 1925. Another memorial plaque commemorates Jan Amos Comenius's stay in Púchov. The evangelical church is also located on Moravská ulica; it is a Neo-Gothic building from 1880 with a Renaissance altar dating from 1643.

Cultural periods from the Early Stone Age to Roman times have been identified at Púchovská skala. A later period of the city's history is represented by the historic Púchov blue-print workshop, which has been located in Púchov since 1898 after being relocated there from Záriečie. The grounds of the Púchov blue-print workshop were registered in 1988 as an immovable national cultural monument under number ÚZPF 10055/1.

The Mikulášsky jarmok takes place on the first Saturday in December in Púchov's pedestrian zone; its tradition began in 2004. The Folklórny Púchov festival has also been held regularly in Púchov since 1982. The dance and singing performances are each preceded by a procession in traditional costume through the town. At the Púchovský jarmok, visitors could enjoy traditional lokše, sausages, sweet specialities and burčiak.

Nature and Educational Trails

The “Pamäť lesa” educational trail includes an information point with a lookout point, seating, a memorial stone and an information board. It was created to make the cultural and natural heritage more attractive to residents and visitors of the cross-border region. The landscape references extend across several mountains: Dieľ, Diel and Na Hladkým are located in the immediate vicinity of Púchov, while Mount Huštie is in the surrounding area. The Church of Svätá Helena is also located in the vicinity of Púchov.

The different place and landscape names mark various focal points between the city's history, nature and regional context. For planning purposes, cultural visits, leisure activities in Púchov and excursions to the mentioned landscape sites can be considered separately.

Getting Around Púchov
