Hrachovište: Hotels, Route 17 and Culture in the Foothills of the Little Carpathians

Hrachovište lies in the foothills of the Little Carpathians below the summit of Plešivec. The village lies in a valley at the confluence of the Jablonka and Turanka streams. Landscape, hiking route, nature and local history exist side by side here within a manageable setting.

Nature

The Hrachovište area has a diverse geological composition and complex structural conditions. The area contains various underground cavities, and fossils of marine animals are also found there. The Čachtické Karpaty include thermophilous Pannonian oak forests and xerothermic open-land biotopes. The natural spectrum therefore ranges from geological features underground to warm-influenced forest and open-land habitats.

Hiking

Route 17 from Nové Mesto nad Váhom via Višňové and Čachtice Castle to Hrachovište is 18 km long, moderately difficult, has an elevation gain of 650 metres and takes about five hours. On the same route, the section from Veľký Plešivec descends through rocky cliffs to Hrachovište. The route then follows the Jablonka stream and crosses the water on a new covered wooden bridge. The stated length, elevation difference and approximate duration make the scale of the route just as concrete as its course through the cliffs and along the stream.

Culture and History

A local legend traces the name Hrachovište and the municipal coat of arms with three roses back to King Matthias and pea porridge. In the past, basketry was widespread in Hrachovište alongside agriculture. After 1918, the inhabitants' sources of income included not only traditional activities but also the household production of hemp linen.

The historic buildings include the church „Kostol Návštevy Panny Márie“. It was built in 1750–1756 as a single-nave church with a polygonally enclosed presbytery, an attached sacristy and a projecting tower. At the same time, it is a Baroque Roman Catholic church dating from 1757 and is recognised as a cultural monument. Its main altar is Late Baroque with Empire elements from the early 19th century; at its centre it bears a polychrome relief of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary.

Getting There

Hrachovište railway station is not in operation; however, trains stop there, and tickets are purchased from the conductor. The train connection to Hrachovište is not direct. In Nové Mesto nad Váhom, it is necessary to change to the Nové Mesto–Trenčín line. These particularities are part of the practical rail information for the village and should be taken into account when travelling there.
