In Moravské Lieskové, evidence of folk culture meets historic churches and protected nature. The Museum of Folk Creativity displays folk clothing, traditional costumes, tools and written memorabilia. The local women’s folk costume also tells of a distinctive craft tradition: it developed from clothing originally made entirely of hemp and included a Rubáč, Kasánka, apron, sleeves, bonnet and boots.

Culture

The local cultural heritage includes reconstructed buildings of folk architecture, the folk architecture of the Kopanits, and water-powered timber mills. There is also an old historic building in the centre of the village. It was formerly a chair house, was later purchased by the Evangelical Church and used as a vicarage.

The Evangelical church was built in 1786 without a tower. Its organ was installed during the tenure of Pastor J. Lacka, while the tower was not added until 1892. The Catholic church was originally built in the 15th century in the Gothic style. The present Catholic church is Romanesque Revival and was consecrated in 1912. Only part of the tower’s enclosing wall remains from the original Catholic church.

The local brass-band tradition is also part of the cultural history of the village and has been documented since 1908. In August 1998, there were still two weeks to go before the celebration of the municipality’s 600th anniversary.

Nature

Most of the area of Moravské Lieskové belongs to the CHKO Biele Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. Several orchid species grow in the flower-rich meadows above the settlement of Šance. Large populations of the grass-leaved iris (Iris graminea) and the rare adder’s-tongue fern (Ophioglossum vulgatum) also grow there.

ŽiTo v SÝPKE is an educational and community centre in Moravské Lieskové where nature, art and the exchange of knowledge come together. The ŽiTo nature garden offers the opportunity to pick fresh fruit, explore a straw-bale maze and relax in a therapeutic garden. Schools and groups can take part in experiential programmes that combine nature-related activities with the acquisition of new skills.

ŽiTo v SÝPKE’s school programmes include kneading dough together and baking bread snakes over a fire. The environmental education programmes take place both inside the centre and in the nature garden and orchard.

Culinary Experiences

TRH Sýpka brings together local food, the work of local producers and community gatherings. Visitors can sample homemade specialities and exchange ideas with farmers, gardeners and craftspeople. In addition to architectural and natural-history topics, the focus is therefore also on local products and personal encounters with the people behind them.
