Hrádok – Archaeology, Tematín Castle and Hotels

Several clearly distinguishable layers converge in Hrádok: sacred architectural history, archaeological evidence, routes to Tematín Castle, and the geomorphological landscape of the central Považie region. The individual sites and routes give the destination a diverse yet clearly tangible character.

Culture

Hrádok is home to the Baroque-Classical Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1729 on the site of an older church. The main altar is also part of its historic furnishings and dates from 1779.

Archaeology

Hradisko Hrádok is a multilayered archaeological site in a strategically advantageous location. From there, it was possible to control a longer section of a prehistoric route through a pass in the Little Carpathians. Settlement and fortification traces from the Eneolithic period have been documented at the hillfort; there is also further evidence from the Early Bronze Age, including evidence of the Maďarovce culture.

Hradisko Hrádok was resettled in the Early Middle Ages. Slavic inhabitants renewed older fortification systems, and the settlement continued until the 12th century. Hrádok was first mentioned in 1246 and belonged to the domain of Tematín Castle.

A medieval fortification stood on the western spur of Hrádok, at a site known as Hradište. The fortification at Hradište was probably built in the 13th century on the foundations of a considerably older fortification. Hrádok is also known for a mass find of iron axe-shaped bars dating from the Great Moravian period, described as the largest of its kind in the territory of Czechoslovakia.

Routes

The MTB Route 5304 from Hrádok via Tematín and Ihelník is 10.9 kilometres long and moderately difficult. It begins in Hrádok, leads via the Ihelník locality and Tematín Castle, and ends back in Hrádok. It therefore forms a closed route with Hrádok as both its starting and finishing point.

From Hrádok's Dolina district, the marked access route to Tematín Castle covers 3.9 kilometres with approximately 340 metres of ascent. Bus connections to the starting point of this access route in Hrádok's Dolina district are very sporadic or entirely unavailable.

A longer connection is provided by Hiking Route 06 from Ducové via Kostolec, Lúka and Tematín Castle to Hrádok. It is 20 kilometres long and moderately difficult. Route 06 includes 912 metres of ascent and takes 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Landscape

The geomorphological formation in the central Považie region was created by the activity of the Váh River. It documents the development of the Váh Valley after the Pleistocene glaciation.
