Kanianka: Reservoir, Churches and Hotels

Kanianka brings together landscapes, water, local history and religious traditions within a compact area. Between the steeply rising Malá Magura, the reservoir and the historic settlement core, different aspects of the village emerge. Its accessibility can also be clearly described: Kanianka can be reached via class III roads through Bojnice or Nedožery-Brezany.

Landscape

Malá Magura rises steeply west of Kanianka; it belongs to the Strážov Mountains. Another distinctive landmark is the Kaniansky dvojkríž. It stands at the highest point of the cadastral territory of the municipality of Kanianka. A hiking ascent and a cycling ascent to this destination are organized.

Water and Paths

Swimming and various water sports are possible at the Kanianka Reservoir. Its surroundings are also suitable for cycling, running and walking. Thus, alongside the water, the surrounding open space is also a central feature. The Stations of the Cross in Kanianka is a quiet place of prayer at the foot of the mountain above the new cemetery. It comprises fourteen stations marked by large stones.

Culture and History

In the village centre stands the Roman Catholic parish church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the main church of the Kanianka parish. It is characterized by a free-standing bell tower. Its more recent construction history is marked by several precise dates: the foundation stone was blessed by John Paul II on 22 April 1990, construction began in May 1992, and the church was consecrated on 7 November 1993.

One of the important historic religious buildings in Kanianka is the Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It was built in 1902 thanks to Štefan Baláž; the first Holy Mass was celebrated there on 14 September 1902. Holy Masses are currently celebrated in the chapel on Saturdays, every week in summer and once a month in winter.

Villagescape and Tradition

The original settlement core of Kanianka is known as “stara Kanianka”. It lies in the valley of the Kaniansky stream and still features traditional linear development along the stream. Traditional folk costume is also part of the inherited everyday and festive culture: earlier generations in Kanianka wore it mainly on ceremonial occasions, such as weddings or church visits.

Some women residents also describe a distinctive Kanianka embroidery with floral motifs. It was made using chain stitch or as solid embroidery.
