Poruba: Cultural Monument, Mill and Ascent to Magura

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Poruba is a national cultural monument and dates from the late 13th or early 14th century. At the same time, it is a rare example of a fortified medieval rural sacred complex with a cemetery. Eleven old lime trees stand on the inside and outside of its enclosure. They are estimated to be about 550 years old and are among the protected trees.

The history of Poruba also includes the Poruba Mill. The predominantly wooden, two-storey building contains preserved features reminiscent of the milling trade. The mill is one of two original mills that have survived in Poruba. It ceased operating in the 1950s or 1960s. Today, it is an unused building that is partly inhabited.

Cultural life also includes Children's Folklore Day. It features children's games, rhymes, dances, songs, carnival customs, spring games, as well as other traditional customs and traditions. The children's folklore ensemble DFS Kapsiarik was founded in 2003 at the Poruba municipal office and sought to revive the carrying out of Morena as well as carnival traditions. Children's Folklore Day usually takes place in Poruba or Nedožery-Brezany.

Hiking

The municipalities' ascent to Magura begins at the Urbárska krčma in Poruba. The route from Poruba to Magura is about 6.8 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 723 metres. The traditional ascent of the municipalities has been held for almost two decades and brings hundreds of participants to the summit of Magura every year.

Activities

In the Prievidza area, Poruba Ski Resort is one of the ski resorts sought out by tourists. There are two direct SAD bus connections to the ski resort; alternatively, a bus stop is located 1.5 kilometres from the ski resort. Poruba also has a ranch with horses.
