Dolné Vestenice – Chapel, Nature and Local Traditions
Dolné Vestenice showcases its local traditions particularly during the Dolnovestenické hody. The traditional summer festival is associated with the name day of Saint James.
Culture and Tradition
The village is home to the present-day Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Its Slovak name is Kaplnka Nepoškvrneného počatia Panny Márie; it was built in 1894.
Since 1998, a wooden Christmas crib, the Drevený betlehem, has been a permanent feature of the grounds of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary during every Christmas season.
The crib includes life-size figures of Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary. Both figures are made of lime wood and were created by carvers Pavol Zmrhlala and Milan Vysoký from Ďurčina near Rajec.
At the Dolnovestenické hody on 24 July 2022, goulash and other refreshments were offered. This documents the connection between this specific festival, traditional food and local celebration culture.
As part of the annual celebrations, a hike to Hradištnica traditionally takes place. The name of the valley also appears in connection with a special natural site in the surrounding area.
Nature
The Vestenická medvedia jaskyňa is located above the Hradištnica valley. The cave is 41 m long and 13 m deep, clearly describing its dimensions.
The Vestenická medvedia jaskyňa is a natural monument. To protect rare sinter formations and hibernating bats, it is normally closed to the public; however, a guided tour led by a qualified expert is possible every year on 5 July.
The Predviničie locality is an interesting area year-round for people interested in flora and fauna. Its significance therefore lies in observing the natural surroundings throughout the individual seasons.
Among others, hoopoes, kestrels, lesser spotted eagles and green woodpeckers occur in Predviničie. Thermophilic insects also live there, complementing the natural area mentioned above.
Local Character
Fruit has been cultivated in Dolné Vestenice since the 15th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, fruit sales increased significantly, revealing the local history through the cultivation and trade of fruit as well.
A hike in the area surrounding Jankovho vŕška is recommended near Dolné Vestenice. The name refers to another area in the vicinity of the village, without equating the hike with the cave’s protected conditions.
