In Prievidza, Baroque sacred architecture, mining history, lively festivals and natural attractions come together. The city combines historic buildings and collections with walking tours, viewpoints and cycling routes.
Culture
The Piarist Church of the Holy Trinity was consecrated on 19 August 1753. Its dual dedication is to the Holy Trinity and the Assumption of Mary. At the same time, the church is considered one of the finest Baroque buildings in Central Europe. The sanctuary at St. Bartholomew’s Church was built at the end of the 14th century. Vertical sundials dating from 1662 are located on its south side.
Prievidza’s industrial history is also clearly present. The Rušňové depo was declared a national cultural monument in 2005 and, with its preserved technical equipment, is considered the best-preserved building of its kind in Slovakia. The Hornonitrianske Museum manages more than a quarter of a million collection items in nine specialist groups. These include extensive invertebrate collections as well as unique paleontological finds documenting the flora and fauna of the Tertiary period.
The Hornonitrianske Folklore Festival presents folk customs, traditions, songs and dances, traditional crafts and folk costumes. The annual three-day Banícky jarmok begins with a mining procession and a mining anthem; it also includes the Prievidzský rínok food festival.
The Zlatá prievidzská cesta comprises two walking tours through Prievidza’s preserved architectural monuments and sights, as well as through the city’s natural features and significant sites. This brings historic and scenic stops within the city together in a shared selection of walking routes.
Nature
Hradisko is located in the cadastral area of Prievidza, in the Hradec suburban district. It is an andesite rock formation in the Vtáčnik Mountains and one of the most significant archaeological sites in Upper Nitra. In Skotňa Park, you can visit the viewpoint on Mariánsky vršok and exercise on a workout playground.
There are different types of cycling routes. The 6 km cycling route between Prievidza and Bojnice can be used in both directions and runs along paved paths. An easy cycling route starts at the entrance to the forest park in Prievidza’s Sever residential district, leads through the forest along a dirt track and then continues on a forest path to the “Klčovňa” forester’s lodge. There, you can take your first break or continue riding.
For practical planning in Prievidza, it is worth making an objective comparison of hotel offers. On the respective offer pages, you can first check the exact location, type of accommodation and possible occupancy. The included services, individual price components and the booking and cancellation conditions are also important. Comparing these fields side by side for several offers helps you identify differences without jumping to conclusions. When checking occupancy, make sure that the number of guests entered matches your needs. Before booking, you can review the key details of the specific offer you have opened once more.
