Discover Oslany: Buchlov Educational Trail, Landscape and Culture

The Buchlov Educational Trail can be started in Osľany, Bystričany or Horná Ves and leads along the ridge through the Buchlov Nature Reserve to Žarnov. Oslany lies at the transition between the Upper Nitra Basin and the Vtáčnik, Tribeč and Strážov Mountains.

Hiking

The Buchlov Educational Trail is 5.3 km long, has an elevation difference of 400 m and takes approximately three to four hours. As a linear footpath that can be walked independently, it can be traversed in both directions; it is intended for use in summer. The trail can be reached via SAD in Osľany, Bystričany or Horná Ves. The route length, elevation difference and time frame provide a concrete basis for planning the walk, while the linear layout leaves both possible walking directions open.

Landscape

More than half of Oslany’s cadastral area is covered by forests; they cover 1,375 ha. The Nitra runs along the edge of the municipality from northeast to southwest. The Slaný stream flows through Oslany and joins the Nitra in the western part of the municipality. The two bodies of water are therefore spatially distinct: the Nitra marks the edge, while the Slaný flows through the settlement and joins it to the west. The Oslany area is also partly part of the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area.

Culture

The Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa church stands on Námestie slobody in Oslany. It was rebuilt again from 1756 to 1768 and features a Baroque-like style. The Immaculata Marian column stands in front of the church. It dates from the second half of the 18th century and is listed in the register of cultural monuments in Slovakia.

Another distinctive landmark is located at the summit of Žarnov: a 6 m high and 4 m wide Slovak double cross was erected there in 2000. The development of the town centre is also part of Oslany’s history. The original centre was architecturally a linear village situated along a stream and developed into a small town with a market square. A brewery was built there in the 18th century.
