Handlová brings together cultural history, mining, trails and railway traces to create a diverse townscape. Its historical themes range from the history of the Germans living in Handlová to industrial coal mining; at the same time, marked trails lead through the surrounding area and to viewpoints.
Culture and History
The exhibition “Dejiny a kultúra Handlovej” presents the history and culture of the Germans living in Handlová. It also introduces the history of the Carpathian Germans in Handlová through archaeological artefacts. Mining tools document the mining of lignite there. Part of the exhibition covers the history of coal mining in Handlová from the beginnings of industrial mining in 1909 to 1945.
Historical buildings include the Kostol sv. Kataríny Alexandrijskej church in Handlová, which dates from the mid-14th century and is considered the oldest building in the town. Banícka kolónia was built as a residential quarter for miners from throughout the former monarchy who came to Handlová to work.
Mining
At the Slovenské Banské Múzeum Handlová, visitors can experience a reconstruction of underground spaces depicting coal mining from the beginning of the 20th century: the development ranges from manual methods to mechanized mining. The museum is housed in a renovated building from 1913 that originally served as a miners’ hotel. It also contains the so-called EKO dielnička. It provides space for extracurricular education, meaningful creative leisure activities and creative activities for all age groups.
Nature and Trails
The Banský náučný chodník is accessible year-round. Its green-marked trail connects with a yellow-marked trail to the summit of Malý Grič and a red-marked trail to the summit of Veľký Grič. Both summits offer beautiful views of Handlová. Along the educational trail, visitors can also learn about activities related to coal mining in Handlová, as well as the fauna and flora of the surrounding area.
The Cesta na Remäta route begins at Námestie baníkov and follows the yellow-marked trail. It passes the post office and the house of services to a car park, crosses a stream over a bridge, and then continues uphill along 1. mája Street to the municipal swimming pool. There it joins Pstruhárska Street.
Railway History
The Bralský tunel, also known as Tunel T. G. Masaryka, is part of a railway line built in the direction of Turiec in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The tunnel is 3.0116 km long. The railway line, including the railway viaduct at its lower end, had already been completed by 1913.
