Hviezdoslavov: Manor House, Bell Tower and Park

The former buildings of the Pálffy manor house are located at the western corner of the village square in Hviezdoslavov.

Culture

The first Slovak school on Žitný ostrov was housed in the east wing of the Pálffy manor house. The single-storey buildings of the manor house have a U-shaped floor plan and display features of agricultural buildings from the second half of the 19th century. Another distinctive architectural trace is the “Jubilejná škola 1928”: it was built in 1928–1929 and is a single-storey functionalist building with an L-shaped floor plan.

The monument to Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, dating from 1971, stands in the park by the village square. It was created by the academic sculptor Tibor Baník and the academic architect R. Janák. Opposite the park by the village square stands a tall bell tower with an iron structure. Its bell was hung on 9 April 1934, while the bell tower was consecrated in September 2007.

Podháj is also home to a distinctive local building: the large stable of Wiener-Welten. The stable was a cowshed; next to the side entrance there were a milk room and an ice cellar.

Nature

Hviezdoslavov lies in the lowland of western Žitný ostrov and has fertile chernozem soils. Vodozádržný Park Hviezdoslavov is a green oasis in Hviezdoslavov. Its features include a fountain, landscaped areas, street furniture and a water-bound footpath.

Vodozádržný Park Hviezdoslavov is intended as a communal space for residents to meet, play and cool off, especially during periods of summer heat. Its function combines green open spaces with an explicitly communal purpose, without requiring any additional facilities for this.

Public Places

Športový areál Bez bariér is a public sports facility in Hviezdoslavov. It is located in the Pažiť area, in the immediate vicinity of the new primary school.
