Janíky: Archaeology, Church and the Malý Dunaj

Janíky combines archaeology, sacred architectural history, regional festivals and a riverside landscape along the Malý Dunaj. Between prehistoric traces, an early 20th-century church and the natural habitats along the river, a multifaceted local character emerges.

Geographical setting

Janíky lies in the Danube Lowland in the northern part of the Great Rye Island (Žitný ostrov). According to the municipality, the village is located 17 kilometres from Bratislava on the Malý Dunaj. This location places Janíky both within the extensive island region and in the surroundings of the small branch of the Danube.

Culture and history

The archaeological history is reflected in several burial mounds. Two prehistoric burial mounds in Dolné Janíky were declared national cultural monuments in 1966; they date from the Late and Final Bronze Age as well as the Early Iron Age. Another burial mound in Horné Janíky dates from the Early Iron Age and is currently not protected as a monument.

In the monument register, Csillagvár is classified as an archaeological castle dating from the period after 1663. In the central register of the Slovak Monuments Fund, Csillagvár is recorded as a fortification or earthwork castle in Dolné Janíky, in the cadastral area of Dolné Janíky, under entry number 2065/1, dated 27 June 1966. Csillagvár can be reached via a field road from the village in a north-easterly direction or along the Malý Dunaj from road II/503 in a north-westerly direction.

Another architectural testimony is the church “Kostol Božského Srdca Ježišovho”. It was built in 1914 on the site of an earlier chapel in a style of historically conceived Romanticism. The church has a single-nave sacred space with a polygonal presbytery termination, vaulted by a shallow dome.

Traditions and dates

The carnival procession in Janíky takes place on the last Saturday before Lent. Its stated aim is to delight local residents and preserve similar beautiful traditions from being forgotten. Thus, this event focuses not only on a date in the calendar but also on maintaining local customs.

For 24 July 2026, the “Beats of Solidarity Festival” was announced in Janíky in connection with the Hornožitnoostrovský Cultural Festival; the event listing also mentions the “Fecske Festival 2026”.

Nature

The “Malý Dunaj” Water Educational Trail includes a station called “Janíky–Ostrov”. Several interesting and rare animal species live on the Malý Dunaj and in its immediate surroundings; numerous plant and fungi species also grow there. Meanders and islands on the Malý Dunaj provide quiet spawning grounds for fish.
