Sap on the Danube – Hotel, Cycling Route and Culture

Sap is located in the south of the Dunajská Streda District, directly on the Danube embankment, at the point where the diversion channel of the Gabčíkovo Hydroelectric Power Station flows into the original riverbed of the Danube. This means that a Danube embankment, a diversion channel and the original riverbed meet here at a precisely defined location.

Nature

Sap is included in the “Dunajské luhy” protected area. The area represents the main stream of the Danube and its left bank with alluvial forests. The natural environment is therefore defined by the river itself and by the characteristic alluvial forests along its left bank.

Cycling

The international Danube Cycling Route passing through the area of Sap is part of the EuroVelo 6 route. A signposted international cycling route runs along the Danube embankment next to Sap. This international cycling route is used by local and foreign cycling tourists. For orientation along the Danube, both the international designation and its inclusion in EuroVelo 6 are therefore specified.

History

Sap, on the Great Rye Island (Žitný ostrov), is first documented in a deed from 1255. The history of the Danube is also closely connected with the town and its surroundings: in the 18th century, millers operated 29 water mills on the Danube.

Culture

Sap is home to a late-18th-century Neoclassical Reformed church. It has a single-nave interior, a polygonal apse and a projecting tower. The Reformed church is in good condition and continues to be used for religious purposes.

The “Rybársky deň” festival is held annually in Sap. It serves to revive the local fishing culture and the fishing traditions passed down by ancestors. The name and purpose of the festival therefore explicitly refer to the local fishing culture and its inherited fishing traditions.
