Kútniky in the Danube Lowland: Cycling Routes and Local History

Kútniky is located in the Danube Lowland in the central part of Žitný ostrov. The municipality has preserved its agricultural character to this day and lies on the main road between Bratislava and Komárno.

Location and Landscape

The municipal area lies at an altitude of approximately 112 to 115 metres above sea level. It is flat and without forests.

The subsoil consists of gravel and sand from the Kolárovo Formation, with thick layers of river deposits from the Danube. The municipal area is drained by a canal and includes a peatland used for extraction purposes.

Cycling Routes

The V/2 Kútniky–S7 Canal cycling route branch is 5 kilometres long and intended for mountain bikes. It begins in Kútniky and connects the main routes V and IX.

The V/2 cycling route branch has been laid out in the territory of Kútniky and marked outside the municipality along the embankment by the S7 Canal. In Dunajská Streda, 2.5 km from Kútniky, a 73.5 km-long, virtually flat and easy-to-navigate route begins; it forms part of the International Danube Cycle Path.

The short connection and the longer Danube route can be incorporated into a day plan as routes of different lengths.

Culture

The sculptor and woodcarver György Lipcsey was born in House No. 80 in Kútniky. The single-storey rectangular House No. 50 in Hegybeneéte was built at the beginning of the 20th century with a thatched gable roof structure and rear farm buildings.

The wayside shrine in Hegybeneéte on Bratislava Street was erected in 1924 by believers from the municipality. The bell of the monument was cast by the company of the Fischer brothers in Trnava. In Blažov, Kútniky, there is a roadside statue of Saint John of Nepomuk.

The bell tower in Blažov was built in 1913 and restored in 1981. The bell tower in Töböréte was built in 1921 and moved to its present location in 1972.

Fuchsov majer in the settlement of Enyed was an agricultural model farm that permanently employed 50 families. Two stable buildings from the original complex have survived; next to one of them is a fire station from the early 20th century.

A hand-operated fire engine from 1912 is kept in the fire station at Fuchsov majer. Only the three-storey tower of the former distillery in Enyed remains. At the corners, it is articulated by pilasters made of unplastered bricks.

In nearby Dunajská Streda, visitors can see a farmhouse kitchen with traditional furnishings and an open hearth in the ethnographic section.
