Šulekovo: Hotels, Circular Trail and History

Šulekovo is situated on the floodplain deposits of the Váh River in the Danubian Lowland. The townscape therefore brings together a distinctly shaped river landscape, historical traces and prominent buildings.

Landscape and Trails

The Šulekovský poznávací okruh is approximately 2,900 metres long. It begins at the Šulek-Holuby Monument and is a circular trail with four stations that introduces visitors to the history of Beregseg–Šulekovo.

There is a 90-metre connection for cyclists in Šulekovo. It links Osloboditeľov and Priemyselná Streets with the flood protection embankment of the Váh River.

Culture

The Šulek-Holuby Monument in Šulekovo dates from 21 October 1928. The Osloboditeľov road bridge is also located in the town. It is an immovable cultural monument in the Secession style.

The Christ the King Church in Šulekovo was built in 1935 to a design by architect Michal Milan Harminc. The three-nave building has a polygonal presbytery termination. The church is in good condition and is used for its intended purpose.

History

Graves from a Hallstatt-period cremation cemetery were found in the cadastral area of Šulekovo. Evidence of a Slavic burial ground and a Slavic settlement from the 9th and 10th centuries was also discovered. The finds and evidence therefore relate to different historical periods within the cadastral area of Šulekovo.

Over a period of 50 years, programmes featuring authentic songs and stories were created to document the lives of ancestors in Šulekovo, formerly Bereseg, and in the Hlohovec region. The Folklórna skupina Šulekovo was involved in this work.
