Geographical Location

Hlohovec lies at the foot of the Považský Inovec mountain range. The Váh flows through Hlohovec.

Culture

Hlohovec Castle originally arose as a medieval castle from the 13th century. A reconstructed part of the Hlohovec castle building has been open to the public again since autumn 2018. Zámocký park contains a small stone grotto with a spring and a stone relief of Neptune.

The refectory of the Franciscan monastery has a Renaissance-Baroque stucco ceiling from 1648 and an exhibition of historic furniture. The Hlohovec Observatory has the second-largest telescope in Slovakia. It offers stargazing and projections with simulations of movements in the night sky.

Trails

The Zámocký poznávací okruh is a walking trail with five stations and a length of approximately 2.6 km. The Šianec lookout point offers a panorama over the Dolnovážska Lowland to the Little Carpathians. The lookout point can be reached on foot from the Empírové divadlo; by car, it can be reached via road II/507 in the direction of Bojničky.

The Šulekovský poznávací okruh is a circular trail with four stations and a length of approximately 2.9 km through Šulekovo and covering the history, flora, and fauna of the Váh region.

Nature

The Sedliská Nature Reserve protects xerothermic, steppe-like vegetation with numerous large-flowered pasque flowers and is part of the European Natura 2000 protected area network. The Sedliská Nature Reserve near Hlohovec is managed by the Little Carpathians Protected Landscape Area Administration and is subject to the fourth level of protection.

Protected animals recorded in the Sedliská protected area include the European green lizard, Aesculapian snake, stag beetle, and praying mantis.

History

Leopoldov Fortress was built from September 19, 1665, according to a system that was modern for its time, as a star-shaped fortification with ramparts, redoubts, and walls. A bridge was built over an arm of the strongly meandering Váh during the construction of Leopoldov Fortress between 1665 and 1669.

Events

At Fraštacké putovanie za vínom, 48 wineries participated on April 26, 2025; the 17th edition was attended by 1,600 guests.

The Tradičný Michalský jarmok takes place in Hlohovec from September 25 to 27, 2026, and includes music, a fairground atmosphere, amusement rides, and an extensive accompanying program for all generations.
