Ducové and Kostolec: Rotunda, Nature Trail and Village Character

Ducové is shaped by Kostolec as a meeting point of landscape, archaeology and living tradition. The limestone-dolomite spur rises 70 to 80 metres above the Váh floodplain and lies between Ducové and Hubina. Within a small area, visitors encounter a freely accessible cultural monument, visible traces of a Great Moravian princely residence, a nature trail and an older part of the village with its own distinctive character.

Culture

Kostolec is a national cultural monument and is freely accessible to the public. At Kostolec above Ducové stands a partially reconstructed Great Moravian princely estate with wooden palisades, a gate and exposed foundations of a pre-Romanesque rotunda. The princely residence at Kostolec, built in the 9th century, is an example of an early feudal seat of the ruling class.

The Ducovská Rotunda also preserves significant archaeological traces. Archaeological investigations uncovered the foundations of a church with a round nave and a horseshoe-shaped apse. Fragments of plaster with remnants of paintings also point to artistic fresco decoration inside the Ducovská Rotunda.

The cultural life at Kostolec also includes a regularly recurring tradition: since 1990, a national pilgrimage devoted to Saints Cyril and Methodius has taken place there near Ducové every year at the beginning of July.

Routes

The Náučný chodník Kostolec Ducové nature trail runs from the centre of Ducové to Kostolec. The route is 1.1 kilometres long, climbs 60 metres and has a walking time of one hour. The trail is self-guided and linear, can be walked in both directions, is designed for pedestrians and is usable year-round.

Its content is presented on site at seven stations and two shared introductory information panels. In this way, the route connects the centre of Ducové with Kostolec and follows the historical and landscape points mentioned above without requiring a guided escort.

Landscape

The location of Kostolec makes the transition between village and landscape immediately visible: the spur rises 70 to 80 metres above the Váh floodplain and lies between Ducové and Hubina. There is also a dedicated connection to Kostolec for cyclists. The yellow cycle route 8201 starts in Ducové and climbs for 1.1 kilometres to Kostolec.

Village Character

The character of Ducové is particularly defined by the eastern, older part of the village on the slope of the Inovecké predhorie. Houses built traditionally from unfired bricks and rammed earth shape the appearance of this part of the village. Alongside the archaeological sites at Kostolec, history is therefore also visible in the traditional building methods preserved within Ducové.
