Among the most visited tourist destinations in the Municipality of Kamnik are the Kamnik Alps with the Kamniška Bistrica Valley. Nature

Just over 26 % of Kamnik’s area is protected under Natura 2000. Veternica Cave on Velika Planina is a natural attraction known for its snowfields, which remain even in summer. Near the source of the Kamniška Bistrica, the Veliki Predaselj and Mali Predaselj gorges cut the riverbed to depths of up to 30 metres. The 30-metre-high Orglice Waterfall is located in the easily accessible side valley of the Kamniška Bela torrent and is a popular starting point for hikes.

Culture and History

The Preskar Museum is located on Velika Planina, in the heart of the shepherds’ settlement; it is open daily during the grazing season. The “Reflections of Kamnik’s Millennia” exhibition conveys the ancient history to visitors through preserved artefacts, replicas, reconstructions, folklore traditions and audiovisual information. The “Stories in Stone – Lapidary” exhibition explores the two-thousand-year history of Kamnik and its surroundings through preserved stone artefacts.

The Miha Maleš Gallery presents a permanent exhibition on the art history of Kamnik from the 18th to the 20th century, featuring works of sculpture, painting, architecture and photography. The permanent exhibition “Reflections of Kamnik’s Millennia” presents life in Kamnik and its surroundings from the earliest known palaeontological finds and settlements through the foundation of the town to the 19th century. The Miha Maleš Gallery and the View Gallery (Galerija Pogled) are located in the centre of Kamnik, at Glavni trg 2, on the first and second floors of a burgher’s house. The permanent exhibition “Miha Maleš – a Poetic Painter” traces the artist’s life and its most important turning points.

Zaprice Castle preserves late Gothic elements, including balcony corbels and Gothic windows, but overall has a Renaissance appearance. Candle and gingerbread production flourished continuously in the Lectar House for more than three centuries from 1701 onwards. The museum candle workshop in the Lectar House displays the tools and equipment used to make candles from bleached beeswax.

The medieval town of Kamnik is known for the Romanesque chapel on Mali grad. In the 15th century, it was surrounded by walls 3 to 10 metres high and a moat, and had four gates. The Franciscan Library in Kamnik preserves around 10,000 volumes printed before the end of the 18th century. Stari grad Castle Hill is a viewpoint with panoramic views; the ascent takes about 30 minutes.

Maistrova hiša hosts the Maistrovi večeri with various speakers as well as students from Gimnazija in srednja šola Rudolfa Maistra Kamnik. The Ursuline Convent above Mekinje near Kamnik is a local cultural monument and has stood there for more than 700 years; its present appearance dates from approximately 300 years ago.

Paths and Activities

Velika Planina can be reached on foot or by cable car and chairlift. In spring, summer and autumn, it offers numerous opportunities for hiking, while in winter it offers snowshoeing, skiing and sledding. A cycle path and a footpath run along the Kamniška Bistrica from Kamnik to Domžale and are suitable for all generations.

A paved road leads through the Kamniška Bistrica Valley to a mountain hut at the river’s source and is used by cyclists. More challenging hiking trails lead to Velika Planina from the valley floor of the Kamniška Bistrica.

Wellness

Terme Snovik offers indoor and outdoor thermal pools, including an indoor pool at 32 Â°C, a whirlpool at 36 Â°C, and outdoor slides in summer.

Regional Tradition

The TrniÄŤ hard cheese from Velika Planina is traditionally associated with courtship and is sold by tourism providers in Kamnik.
