Kamniška Bistrica – Hotels, Source and Predaselj Gorge

Nature and Water

At the upper end of the alpine Kamniška Bistrica Valley, Dom v Kamniški Bistrici stands directly above a small lake fed by several karst springs. Dom v Kamniški Bistrici offers views of the Kamnik Alps surrounding the valley. In winter, the source of the Kamniška Bistrica offers views of the surrounding snow-covered peaks. Visitors can drink crystal-clear water at the source.

Veliki and Mali Predaselj form the narrowest section of the Kamniška Bistrica riverbed. The Veliki Predaselj section of the gorge is 30 metres deep.

Trails and Experiences

The Kamniška Bistrica–Žagana peč–Kokrsko sedlo route is an easy mountain hiking trail starting at Dom v Kamniški Bistrici. On the Koželjeva Footpath, visitors can see mountain-stream tributaries and smaller hidden springs throughout the Kamniška Bistrica Valley.

By prior arrangement, mountain rescuers can abseil visitors into Predaselj Gorge and guide them along a steel cable system beside the gorge. A walk lasting a few minutes along Predaselj Gorge offers views of the riverbed and the crystal-clear water of the Kamniška Bistrica.

Žagana peč is considered a glacial erratic and can be reached from Dom v Kamniški Bistrici in a stated travel time of 45 minutes. Sivnica is a glacial erratic and is considered the largest erratic boulder in Slovenia. The Memorial Park for Those Who Perished in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps can be reached from Dom v Kamniški Bistrici in a stated travel time of 20 minutes.

The approximately 30-metre-high waterfall in a side valley of the Kamniška Bela mountain stream is a relatively easily accessible hiking destination. One experience combines cycling, hiking, relaxation and Kneipp therapy according to the Kneipp method; the route leads from Keršmančev Park to the source of the Kamniška Bistrica. During a guided experience, visitors can taste various spring waters under the guidance of a local guide and a water sommelier.

Culture and Cuisine

King Alexander’s hunting lodge in the immediate vicinity of the source of the Kamniška Bistrica was designed in 1933 according to plans by Jože Plečnik. The stone table known as Archduke’s Table (Firštova miza) in the Kamniška Bistrica Valley is named after Archduke Charles II and his entourage ate there following a hunting expedition.

The princely game goulash (Firštov divjačinski golaž) recalls the hunting tradition of the Kamniška Bistrica Valley. The recipe for chamois soup comes from the Kamniška Bistrica Valley. Chamois soup can be sampled at the Pri planinskem orlu guesthouse.
