Podgorje: Cultural History and Regional Routes

The Church of St. Nicholas in Podgorje pri Kamniku is listed as cultural heritage unit EŠD 1880. Two personalities born in Podgorje are also part of the cultural significance of the place. The writer Josip Ogrinec was born here in 1844. Felicita (Terezija) Kalinšek was also born in Podgorje pri Kamniku; under the name Felicita Kalinšek, she is known as the author of a well-known Slovenian cookbook.

A regional cycling connection links Kamnik, Mengeš, Trzin, and Ljubljana. It opened on April 5, 2023, after construction work had already been completed in 2022. The regional connection between Kamnik and Ljubljana includes 13.7 kilometers of new cycling connections. In the Municipality of Kamnik, the route was intended to begin in the village of Podgorje and lead eastwards across Dupliško polje on an existing field track as far as the railway line. It was then intended to continue southwards to Korenova cesta.

The so-called “Krvavo znamenje” in Podgorje dates from 1510. The wayside shrine stands at a place where death sentences were once carried out. The conservation and restoration work on the “Krvavo znamenje” wayside shrine has been completed.

A fairytale forest route leads from the church in Podgorje to Zaprice Castle. The Intermunicipal Museum Kamnik is housed in the castle.
