Velika Planina: Find a Hotel and Discover the Shepherds’ Settlement

The shepherds’ settlement on Velika Planina comprises around 140 huts and is known for its characteristic architecture.

Culture and History

The Preskar Museum is located in the shepherds’ settlement and is open daily during the grazing season. The present-day Preskar Museum hut was rebuilt in the summer of 1945 after the previous hut was burned down shortly before the end of the Second World War. It was built in its original oval shape. Every day at 1 p.m., the museum demonstrates the traditional production of Trnič cheese, which is typical of Velika Planina.

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows was also rebuilt in 1988. The original chapel had been burned down by German soldiers at the end of the Second World War. During the summer grazing season, holy masses are held on Velika Planina every Sunday.

Nature and Trails

The cable car from Kamniška Bistrica (Kamniška Bistrica 2, 1242 Stahovica) leads to Velika Planina. From the mountain station, you can reach the summit on foot in 45 minutes or take the six-seater chairlift to Gradišče, the summit of Velika Planina, in 7 minutes. Velika Planina has numerous walking and hiking trails that are also suitable for hikers with lower fitness levels.

The approximately two-hour educational trail “In the Footsteps of the Shepherds” provides insights into the shepherds’ lives, customs and habits, architecture, their former way of life and the natural sights of Velika Planina. After taking the cable car up to the mountain pasture, you can continue along the route by bicycle for 2.5 kilometres to the Zeleni rob inn.

The Jama Veternica cave comprises Mala Veternica and Velika Veternica. The two hollows were formed through weathering and the collapse of their ceilings, creating two collapse dolines. Snow remnants can still be found in Velika Veternica in summer. The Jama Dovja griča cave is located in Tiha dolina, is only 9 metres deep and is known for stories said to have taken place in its surroundings.

Winter

At an altitude of between 1,412 and 1,666 metres, the Velika Planina ski resort offers 3.5 kilometres of groomed ski slopes, most of which are of moderate difficulty. This season, the Jurček drag lift and a conveyor belt intended for beginners and the youngest skiers are also in operation.

The night toboggan run begins at the intermediate station of the chairlift and ends at the valley station; it is lit and marked. Guided themed snowshoe tours with a local guide are available on Velika Planina.
