Kamnik: Culture, Views and Trails Nearby

The exhibition rooms of the Intermunicipal Museum Kamnik are located in Zaprice Castle above Kamnik, near the railway station and bus stations. The Cultural Three-M (3 M) walk passes through units of this museum; visitors can choose the order of the stops themselves. The exhibition Reflections of Kamnik’s Millennia includes educational areas where visitors can learn about Roman games, coinage, ancient measurements and legends.

The Miha Maleš Gallery presents a permanent exhibition on the art history of Kamnik from the 18th to the 20th century. Works of sculpture, painting, architecture and photography are on display. The View Gallery in the centre of Kamnik is an exhibition space for contemporary artistic creation. In 1979, Miha Maleš donated a total of 2,590 works to the town of Kamnik; the municipality housed this extensive gift the following year in a town house at Glavni trg 2.

The exhibition in the birthplace of Rudolf Maister is located in part of the ground floor of a 19th-century town house at Šutna 23, near the parish church of Šutna. Šutna Street preserves characteristic shop signs and other signs of craftsmanship. The Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, a work by Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, is located in the Franciscan monastery in Kamnik. Kamnik also preserves a two-storey Romanesque chapel with a crypt; today, it is considered one of the town’s most important landmarks.

The Franciscan Library in Kamnik preserves around 10,000 books and volumes printed before the end of the 18th century. The festival Dnevi narodnih noš in oblačilne dediščine in Kamnik dates back to 1966 and attracts more than 30,000 visitors every year.

The Kamnik–Godič cycling route is 3.2 km long and runs mostly along the Kamniška Bistrica River. The route includes ten rest areas, some of which are equipped with unique wooden play equipment, information boards and bicycle racks. At Pod Skalo, there are beach volleyball courts near Kamnik’s town centre and next to the municipal Olympic swimming pool. Kamnik’s municipal swimming pool is located near the old town.

There are themed walking trails in the hills around Snovik Spa. Kamnik also offers a culinary tour of four breweries, accompanied by matching beer snacks.

In the surrounding area of Kamnik, a paved road leads through the Kamniška Bistrica Valley to the mountain hut in Kamniška Bistrica. The source of the Kamniška Bistrica River is also located in the valley of the Kamniška Bistrica, in the surrounding area of Kamnik.

In a side valley of the Kamniška Bela stream, the approximately 30-metre-high Orglice Waterfall is located in the surrounding area of Kamnik. Access to the pools below the waterfall is relatively easy; the site is suitable for hiking.

A viewpoint in Kamnik offers views of the town centre and the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. It can be reached via an easy ascent of approximately 30 minutes and offers panoramic views in good weather.
