History and Culture

One of the notable sacred buildings is the Church of St. Anne in Fram. The Neo-Romanesque church was built in 1875 on the site of an older castle chapel, on an elevated fortified site above the village. The Chapel of St. Agnes likewise combines architectural history with present-day use: it was built in 1843 and restored in 1997. Services are still held there on January 21, the feast day of Saint Agnes.

Only ruins remain of the Castle of Fram. They lie in the forest on the hill above the church. A considerably older trace leads to the Roman Spring in Fram: in Roman times, the spring was connected to a water supply system that transported water to the Roman city of Poetovia, now Ptuj.

The village’s historical development also includes the former importance of water power. In the past, more than 90 water wheels in Fram powered local mills, sawmills and several oil mills, thereby shaping the character of the village. The traditional festival Anino žegnanje, the Feast of Saint Anne, takes place in Fram on Anne Sunday in July.

Nature

The Stream of Fram is a protected hydrological natural monument. Its upper course contains a 12-metre-high waterfall. Hiking routes to the Slap Skalca waterfall lead from Mariborska koča over 1.2 kilometres or from Reka over 6 kilometres.

The paths through the landscape also connect different ways of enjoying the outdoors. The Planica nad Framom hiking and walking trail passes through Pohorje forests and along pastures and meadows, and is suitable for children and adults. The natural science, cultural-historical and geographical educational trail of Fram Primary School is integrated into marked hiking trails and is of interest to tourists.

Wine

Fram was already known for its excellent wines before 1435. Today, the wine-growing area of the Podpohorje Wine Route also includes the surroundings of Fram. The Podpohorje Wine Route offers visitors wine tastings together with meals. Thus, alongside the waterways and historic buildings, the regional wine tradition is also a distinct defining feature of the town.
