Culture

The present-day Basilica of Mary Help of Christians was consecrated on October 7, 1900. On January 1, 2000, it was officially declared Slovenia’s Marian national shrine. The altarpiece of the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians depicts Mary with the Christ Child. Its façade was designed according to plans by the architect Ivan Vurnik.

The Chapel of St. Francis of Assisi is also part of the history of the ensemble. It was built in 1967 in the atrium between the monastery and the church, according to plans by Ivan Vurnik. Thus, alongside the basilica, Brezje is also home to another sacred building whose origins are clearly defined in both chronological and architectural terms.

The Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Brezje has attracted pilgrims since 1863. The basilica also hosts a pilgrimage for the sick. The shrine in Brezje also includes a Franciscan Marian Centre.

The Brezje Nativity Museum offers a different cultural focus. It contains more than 500 nativity displays and presents the history of making nativity displays. In Brezje, sacred architecture, religious tradition and the craftsmanship involved in creating nativity scenes therefore stand alongside one another as distinct themes.

Pilgrimage trails

The paths around Brezje lead through a variety of landscapes. The Brezje Path of Peace runs from Brezje mostly through the forest to the Peračica Waterfalls. The circular trail begins at the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians and descends via several terraces into the valley of the Peračica stream.

The Rosary Bead Trail follows old pilgrimage routes in a loop shaped like a rosary bead. From the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, it leads across fields and through forests to the hamlets below Mount Dobrča. Its shape and route thus connect the religious history of the pilgrimage trails with the open and wooded landscapes below the mountain.

Another connection is provided by the Otoče–Brezje pilgrimage trail. It combines a train journey to Otoče with a walk to the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians along an old pilgrimage route. The route therefore consists of a train journey followed by a walk.
