Hotels in Dutovlje: Cultural Heritage, Karst Gardens and Teran
Dutovlje brings together settlement heritage, the Karst landscape, gardens and wine with specific sites and the Teran Circular Trail. In the old village centre, along paths south and east of the town, and at the Bunčetova Homestead, history, landscape and regional culture come together.
Culture
At the centre of the old village stands the Church of Saint George. During the Ottoman incursions, it was fortified with an enclosing wall and four towers. The village settlement of Dutovlje is classified as settlement heritage. The village scene also includes the village well, featuring a carved Christogram and a heart dating from 1848. Another historical site is the Austro-Hungarian military cemetery near Dutovlje, with the graves of 1,374 Austro-Hungarian soldiers.
Sites and Trails
The Austro-Hungarian military cemetery lies in a doline south of Dutovlje. From Dutovlje, the route follows the main road towards Kreplje; after just over 400 metres, a field path branches off behind the civilian cemetery to the nearby doline.
Landscape
South of Dutovlje, towards the Žekenc and Volnik hills, there are meadows, pastures, common land and forest. East of the town, towards the village of Skopo, there are pastures, forest and cultivated Karst dolines. Pepa’s Gardens also reflect the typical Karst landscape and draw on its characteristic forms and materials.
Circular Trail
The Teran Circular Trail begins in the square in front of the Bunčetova Homestead and runs along easy forest and village paths past numerous vineyards. The circular trail takes 2 to 3 hours and is considered easy. Along the route, there are views of vineyards, dry-stone walls and stone villages.
Gardens and Remembrance
At the Bunčetovi Estate in Dutovlje, Pepa’s Gardens are open to the public. Pepa’s Karst Garden combines traditional materials from local handicrafts with typical Karst plants. Pepa’s History Garden won a gold medal in the Artisan Gardens category at the Chelsea Flower Show in London in 2012. The Bunčetovi Estate also houses an authentic memorial room dedicated to Boris Pahor.
Wine and Teran
At Štok Wine Cellar, visitors can taste Teran, Malvasia, Teran liqueur and other wines, as well as tour the cellar and vineyards. At the 54th Teran and Prosciutto Festival, visitors were scheduled to be able to taste Karst prosciutto and Teran.
