Lokev: Vilenica Cave, Culture and Hotels

Lokev can be explored through specific sites and recurring events. Underground nature, sacred art, military history, literature, local festivals and cycling are connected here in different, clearly identifiable ways.

Nature

Vilenica Cave is considered the first tourist cave in the world. The route inside Vilenica Cave that is open to visitors is 450 metres long, illuminated and equipped. A guided tour of Vilenica Cave takes approximately one hour. The International Vilenica Literary Prize is awarded every year in the cave's Ballroom.

Culture and History

The Lokev Military Museum is located in Tabor defensive tower, which was built in 1487 and designated a cultural monument of local importance. The museum presents temporary thematic exhibitions covering periods from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the end of the Second World War. The Lokev Military Museum also participates in the establishment of ethnological exhibitions connected with the former life of the Karst population.

Lokev is home to the Gothic Chapel of Mary, Help of Christians, and St Michael's Church. The ensemble of St Michael's Church is protected as a cultural monument of local importance because of its exceptional artistic, architectural, ethnological and historical features. St Michael's Church is known for the murals painted by the academic painter Tone Kralj in 1942 and 1943.

Local Specialties

Kal Kaluža in Lokev is a restored local landmark. Pršutarna Lokev s'Krasa is considered the oldest prosciutto producer in the Slovenian Karst.

Literature and Festivals

The International Vilenica Literary Festival is organised annually by the Slovene Writers' Association and takes place in Lokev and Vilenica. It brings together poets, novelists, dramatists and essayists, with a focus on the literary creativity of Central Europe. Literature in Lokev is therefore not limited to a single venue, but is part of an annual recurring event involving several locations.

Opasilo Lokev is also associated with a fixed local date. Opasilo Lokev is described by the local community as its largest local festival. Opasilo Lokev 2026 takes place from 18 to 27 September 2026; the programme includes a rock music evening in Lokev on 18 September 2026.

Cycling Route

The 81-kilometre Kolo kulturne Krasa cycling route passes through Sežana, Lipica, Lokev and Divača, as well as other places in the Karst. The Kolo kulturne Krasa cycling route is suitable for trekking bikes and racing bikes. Its route therefore connects several named places in the Karst in a single trail.
