Štanjel: Karst Culture, Museums and Hotels

Štanjel focuses on the culture of the Karst, with several museums, exhibitions and buildings. The Kraška hiša museum collection is dedicated to the material folk culture of the Karst. It is housed in a building that is probably among the oldest in Štanjel and illustrates the architectural features of original Karst houses from the Romanesque and Gothic periods.

Culture

One of the defining buildings is St. Daniel's Church. It is a Gothic church from the mid-15th century, was remodelled in the Baroque period and furnished with significant stone altars. Its distinctive bell tower is possibly considered the best-known symbol of Štanjel. The Lojze Spacal Gallery is dedicated to an artist who drew inspiration from motifs from the Karst and Istria and transformed them into his own visual language.

Grad Štanjel Museum offers an interactive exhibition about the culture and natural wealth of the Karst. In the same museum, the “Nature and People in the Karst” exhibition conveys the Karst landscape through sensory experiences involving Karst stone, wind and geological features. The Museum of the Slovenian Language and Books offers another interactive approach: it presents the development of the Slovenian language and the book through seven interactive experiences.

The Grad Štanjel Visitor Centre provides information about the tourism programmes taking place in Štanjel, as well as the range of tourist offerings in the Karst and Slovenia. The renovated Natalijina hiša serves as the new entrance and interpretation centre for the Ferrari Garden. It combines a permanent exhibition, interpretive content and an inviting space for locals, creatives and visitors.
