Komen – Karst Trails, St. George’s Church and Hotels
Komen showcases its natural and cultural heritage through specific trails, architecture and regional products. The route “Čez kraške travnike in vasi” starts in the town and leads towards Štanjel. It passes through Cirje Forest Park, is 11 km long and takes 3 to 4 hours.
Culture and history
St. George’s Church is another prominent landmark in Komen. It preserves a Gothic chancel whose stonework dates its construction to around 1470. The interior is an early example of Venetian late Baroque classicism in the area of the former Diocese of Gorizia. Another layer of art history was added between 1898 and 1901: Clemente del Neri painted the interior during this period.
Komen also played an important role as a tourist centre between the two world wars. At that time, the town attracted holidaymakers and Sunday visitors from Trieste, Tržič and even Venice.
Culinary experiences
Špacapanova Hiša focuses on local Karst varieties and natural wine production without added yeast or sulphur. At Špacapanova Hiša, meat products are cured, cheese is matured, grapes are grown and wine is produced. Viticulture and processing are therefore not presented here merely as individual products, but are described specifically through the work processes mentioned above.
At Kraška hiša, fresh ingredients from the Karst and the Adriatic coast are used every day.
Cycling
The GEOMOB project includes a regional cycling connection between Sežana and Komen, constructed in 2023. The GEOMOB Sežana–Komen cycling connection is 19.93 km long. Along this connection, the GEOMOB project provides for locations for rest areas with shelter and benches, in some cases also with a table. Locations for bicycle parking facilities are also planned. The rest areas and parking facilities are therefore described as planned locations, not as amenities that already exist.
Another guided cycling and culinary tour from Mirenski Kostel leads through a varied Karst landscape with dry-stone walls, vineyards and numerous olive groves. This tour is 90 km long and takes 4 hours and 45 minutes of actual riding time, excluding breaks. Its difficulty level is 3 out of 5. The combination of route length, actual riding time and difficulty level describes an excursion of a substantially different scale from the 11 km route starting in Komen.
