Pliskovica: Karst, Village History and Crafts

Nature

Culture
The Baroque Church of St. Thomas stands at the highest point of Pliskovica. Its present-day choir was formerly part of the nave, while the sacristy was once the Gothic choir. In the village square, the Latnik evropskega prijateljstva symbolises friendship with the cross-border neighbouring municipality of Zgonik and the 25 EU Member States that joined when Slovenia acceded to the EU.
In front of the church, the Pliskovica linden tree is considered a natural monument. It is estimated to be more than 400 years old and is protected as a cultural monument. The village well of Pliskovica and its surroundings were extensively renovated in 2011.
Rural Heritage
The Slamčeva Domačija has been converted into a youth hostel and comprises a residential building and a barn. The barn was formerly used as a stable and for storing hay, agricultural produce, tools and a cart. Visitors can take part in a guided tour of the Slamič Domačija, where the Karst architecture and details of traditional rural life are presented.
Events
For organised groups of more than 10 people, a guided ascent of Volnik can be arranged through the local visitor service. Festival kamna includes practical stone-carving workshops. Festival kamna was announced in Pliskovica as a three-day event focusing on crafts, heritage and connectedness; stone-carving workshops were announced for 13 to 15 June 2025.
Honey, Wine and Collections
The Čebelarstvo Petelin – Irma Petelin apiary at Pliskovica 102, 6221 Dutovlje has been welcoming visitors for years and provides information about the life of bees, beekeepers' work, beekeeping methods, queen-bee breeding, honey production and other bee products. Visits to Čebelarstvo Petelin – Irma Petelin may include tasting different varieties of Kraški med, a demonstration of honey extraction and a tour of the beekeeping facilities.
Wine and Teran liqueur are available for sale and tasting in Pliskovica; there is also an ethnological collection. Prior registration is recommended.
