Železniki brings the history of ironworking to life through preserved buildings, museums and local traditions. At the same time, the townscape includes a forest educational trail, a themed walking tour, sports facilities and special experiences. The individual stops cover different themes, ranging from Plavčeva hiša to the slopes of Jelovica.

Culture and history

Muzej Železniki is located in Plavčeva hiša and presents collections on ironworking, woodworking, slate roofing, lace-making and Dražgoški kruhki. Muzej Železniki also includes a gallery for occasional museum and art exhibitions. A permanent museum collection on sports can be viewed in Športna dvorana Železniki.

The Plavž is the only preserved building from the period of ironworking in Železniki and is protected as a technical monument. What remains there is part of a blast furnace for smelting iron ore, dating from 1860. Iron ore was last smelted in the Plavž in 1902; this is also considered the official end of ironworking in Železniki.

The Plnada building was constructed in 1614 by Friulian smiths from Palmanova. On the eve of Gregorjevo, the “Luč v vodo” tradition is celebrated at the only pond in Železniki, behind Plnada. The “Sprehod po starih Železnikih” walking tour introduces houses where famous residents of Železniki lived or were born. Egrov vrt is located in Racovnik in Železniki and was once owned by ironworks owner Johan Globočnik.
