A walk through Škofja Loka takes you through one of the best-preserved medieval town centres in Europe; during Lent and Easter, the Škofja Loka Passion Play procession involves more than 900 local participants.

Culture and History

A stone semicircular bridge crosses the Selca Sora. It was built in the mid-14th century and is considered the only one of its kind in Central Europe.

Loka Castle was originally built in 1202 and today houses archaeological, historical, cultural-historical, artistic, natural history and ethnological collections. The Škofja Loka Museum is housed in Loka Castle and presents archaeological, historical, cultural-historical, artistic, ethnological, natural history and sports-related collections, as well as an open-air museum.

In the castle garden of Loka Castle stands a 16th-century house with a black kitchen; it illustrates the lives of cottagers and small farmers from the wider Loka area.

The Capuchin Library of Škofja Loka preserves Dalmatin's Bible, books with bindings dating from before 1500 and other rare book treasures. To visit the Capuchin Library, find your way to the Capuchin Monastery and ring the bell there.

The Škofja Loka Passion Play includes performances at six-year intervals; since 2016, it has been included on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Kreativnice is a modern textile centre on Spodnji trg in Škofja Loka, where designers work with felting, weaving, hand-sewing, dyeing textiles with plants and printing. There are no fixed opening hours: when the designers are on site, the space is also open to the public; opening by appointment is also possible.

Trails and Water

Romuald's Trail is an interactive tour with 13 stations that begins and ends in the Passion Room on Mestni trg. The interactive tour takes about 1.5 hours and includes games, challenges and a reward for completing 13 tasks.

The Three Castles Trail begins at Loka Castle and leads to the ruins of the tower on Krancelj and to Wild Loka Castle.

The trail to Puštal begins at Škofja Loka's town square, opposite Martin House, and conveys stories about how the people of Puštal lived in the past.

The Selca and Poljana Sora rivers meet in Škofja Loka and then continue as the Sora River. Škofja Loka has natural outdoor swimming pools and bathing spots that locals and visitors use to cool off during the summer months.

Crafts and Cuisine

Tasty Škofja Loka Steps is a guided culinary experience through the medieval town centre that combines a town walk, a five-course meal and an introduction to local culinary and craft traditions.

The Rokodelski center DUO Škofja Loka offers craft exhibitions and hands-on workshops where visitors can make a souvenir, a gift or a snack. Under the guidance of a craftswoman, they can make models or bake mali loški kruhek.
