Culture and History

In 1983, two tall male nišans with rosette motifs were documented in the Nišan Necropolis of Donji Lučani. The two nišans from Donji Lučani documented in 1983 are 2.85 metres and 1.85 metres high, respectively. An additionally identified female nišan has no inscription and is undecorated. A newly discovered male nišan is 2 metres high, inclined toward the ground, cracked at the turban, covered with moss and overgrown with brush.

Nišan I is 2.75 metres high and bears a precisely carved six-petalled rosette within two circles. Nišan II is missing its turban or head section; without this part, it is now 1.90 metres high. Nišan II bears a rosette within a single circle. During investigations, two additional nišans were identified in the Nišan Necropolis of Donji Lučani. Based on their shape, one is attributed to a woman and one to a man.

The Nišan Necropolis of Donji Lučani formerly contained more tombstones. Approximately ten additional nišans were also observed in moss and brush. Based on the existing nišans, the necropolis is provisionally dated to the 17th and 18th centuries. The grave beside Nišan I has an ajakluk and a stone santrač next to the headstone.

The descriptions combine precise measurements and rosette motifs with different states of preservation. These include the missing head section of Nišan II, the inclination and overgrowth of the newly discovered male nišan, and the missing inscription and decoration of the female nišan. The formerly larger number of tombstones and the approximately ten nišans observed amid the vegetation are also part of the recorded description of the site inventory.
