Kostel sv. Gotharda began as a single-nave Romanesque church dating from the mid-12th century. Based on a design by the important Prague architect Jan Josef Wirch, it was rebuilt between 1765 and 1772 into its present Baroque form. Despite historicist alterations, the building preserves most of its medieval structures, architectural elements and stonework, including a Late Gothic roof truss.

Further historical traces can be found at several locations in Český Brod: the first mention of the building of the original Stará radnice dates from 1402. The historic cellar complexes beneath Český Brod were probably established in the 14th century. The present use of Šatlava is associated with the year 1850; since 1998, the Šatlava Gallery has served as a small exhibition space.

The exhibitions at the Podlipanské Museum cover the memorable Battle of Lipany on 30 May 1434 as well as the Slavic hillforts in Pošembeří. Several seasonal exhibitions and accompanying programmes are also held there every year.

Visiting

The bell tower at Kostel sv. Gotharda was built in the second half of the 16th century from sandstone blocks as a new Renaissance tower. It is currently not open to the public. The interior of Kostel sv. Gotharda is occasionally opened to the public; however, there are no fixed visiting hours.

Nature

The entrance sign for the Údolím Šembery educational trail stands by the brewery complex on Tuchorazská Street in Český Brod. The more demanding route of the educational trail is approximately 11 km long and has 12 stops.
