Chotýšany: Castle, Church and Nový Pond

The castle complex is located in the northern part of the municipality, west of the Church of St. Gall. The listed castle complex includes the castle, two granaries, a stable, a farm building, a fortress, the enclosing walls, a castle park, a garden and a statue of St. John of Nepomuk; the castle park is one of the protected components of the castle complex. The castle has a Baroque south wing dating from before the mid-18th century and a Neo-Gothic north wing dating from before 1841.

The former Chotýšany fortress had an isolated residential building dating from the late 13th or early 14th century and is located in the grounds of the former farmyard immediately next to the castle. After it ceased to serve a residential function, it was first converted into a brewery and later into a distillery. The surviving remains include the ground floor of a rectangular, tower-like residential building and part of a curved defensive wall.

The stone cross in the village square was erected on September 28, 1881, moved next to the war memorial in 1928 and still stands there today. A chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes was built there in 1933 and consecrated on August 13, 1933.

The wayside shrine on the road to the “U Váňů” mill stands on the road from Chotýšany at the fork leading to the settlement of Onšovice and the former “U Váňů” mill. Chotýšany also has a pillar-shaped wayside shrine, known as a Boží muka, a small religious monument.

The cast-iron cross, originally called “Kuthanův křížek,” stood at a crossroads by the “Císař” pond; today, this name refers to the cross erected around 1990 on a stone pedestal between two lime trees.

Ivana Syslová mainly produces wheel-thrown, glazed and fired utilitarian pottery. Her pottery is predominantly glazed white, blue or green and decorated with incised patterns or small dots. Her work can be discovered at pottery markets, fairs or farmers’ markets in the surrounding area. The Friends of Chotýšany association is associated with the Chotýšany celebrations, music evenings and theatre performances.

In the neighboring cadastral area in the direction of Benešov, about 3 km from Chotýšany, lies Jemniště Castle, offering tours of the castle and park, summer theatre performances for children and concerts during Advent.

Chotýšany’s Nový Pond, formerly called “Židák,” is used for sport fishing. A small park with ornamental trees and shrubs was created around Chotýšany’s Nový Pond.
