Kněžičky: Hotels and accommodation

Kněžičky combines an important bird sanctuary with thermophilous forests, wetland habitats and a pilgrimage tradition that is still maintained today.

Nature

The Žehuňský rybník–Obora Kněžičky Bird Sanctuary protects the habitats of the little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus) and the spotted crake (Porzana porzana). It is significant as a breeding area for 131 bird species (1996–2002) and as a migration area for waterbirds and birds of prey.

The Kněžičky National Nature Reserve covers 89 hectares and protects thermophilous oak forests with a considerable proportion of old trees compared with other areas. Thermophilous steppe and forest-steppe communities also occur there. The reserve is accessible exclusively via public roads and forest paths.

The Kopičácký rybník National Nature Monument is located in the cadastral area of the municipality of Kněžičky. It comprises wetland habitats with peatlands and purple moor-grass meadows, reed beds and aquatic communities, as well as populations of rare and endangered plants and animals, particularly Sesleria uliginosa, Potamogeton gramineus and Rana ridibunda.

Obora Kněžičky

Obora Kněžičky comprises a complex of buildings from the former royal game preserve situated within an 850-hectare fenced forest complex. In its grounds, Dr. Pio Kinský dal Borgo operates Hotel Obora with a restaurant. Forest ponds that serve as retention basins have also been restored.

Water and tradition

The municipal water reservoir, covering an area of 3,700 m², is used for swimming and fishing. Traditional pilgrimages are still celebrated in Kněžičky.
