Koněprusy is characterized by karst and limestone, fossils, and traces of human settlement. The cave system of the Koněpruské jeskyně on Zlatý kůň has a network of passages with a total length of more than 2 kilometers.

Geographical Location

The Zlatý kůň National Nature Monument lies 500 meters south of Koněprusy and is located in the cadastral area of Koněprusy. The Kobyla Nature Reserve covers areas in the cadastral area of Koněprusy and lies 1,500 meters southeast of Koněprusy.

Nature

The Zlatý kůň area is a protected paleontological landscape of Devonian limestone with well-preserved fossils from a tropical coral reef environment. The Kobyla Nature Reserve preserves a geologically significant quarry exposure, paleontological and archaeological finds, as well as xerothermic steppe and forest-steppe habitats. The Kotýz National Nature Monument encompasses karst features in Devonian limestone, xerothermic open-land habitats, and a diverse invertebrate fauna in the cadastral area of Koněprusy.

History and Culture

Archaeological finds in the Kotýz National Nature Monument document human settlement since the Paleolithic. The Koněpruská vápenice is a technical monument documenting the traditional lime burning characteristic of the landscape of Český kras. It is probably the last surviving pre-industrial lime kiln in Český kras; it also has an unusual design with two shafts.

Visitor Facilities

The House of Nature of Český kras is located near the Koněpruské jeskyně in a geologically remarkable area of the Kotýz and Zlatý kůň national nature monuments. It offers an indoor exhibition on the geological development of the area, karst processes, fossils, and the living nature of the protected landscape, as well as interactive elements, models, and games. The outdoor exhibition includes a geopark trail with dozens of rock samples documenting more than 600 million years of Earth’s history. The House of Nature also includes a ticket office for the Koněpruské jeskyně, a gift shop, refreshments, and facilities for families and cyclists. The Zlatý kůň educational trail leads through valuable natural areas of Český kras.
