Mořina: Hotels and accommodations

Around Mořina stretches a mining landscape with old limestone quarries. The well-known Velká Amerika and Malá Amerika quarries include pits up to 100 metres deep, with clear lakes at the bottom. Velká Amerika is one of the best-known flooded quarries in the Czech Republic and is located about 4 km from Karlštejn Castle.

History

An important historical monument in Mořina is the Kostel sv. Stanislava. It was originally founded as a Gothic church and was first mentioned in writing as a parish church as early as 1353. In the 18th century, it was rebuilt and modified in the Baroque style. The Jewish cemetery is also part of the village’s history: it was established in 1735–1736 and preserves 312 gravestones dating from 1740 to the second half of the 1930s.

Nature

During approximately 130 years of mining activity, a total of 20 quarries were opened in the Mořina area, including 19 open-pit mines. Many are now hidden in the forests of the CHKO Český kras west of the municipality of Mořina. The Štoly Velké Ameriky European protected area safeguards the wintering grounds of several rare bat species in old, inaccessible tunnels connected to the quarries.

Sightseeing

Velká Amerika can be reached on foot or by car. The underground tunnels connecting the quarries near Mořina can be visited with trained guides from Spolek HAGEN Mořina. A tour of the Velká Amerika quarry usually takes about 60–90 minutes and involves an elevation difference of 180 metres. It also includes explanations of the history of mining at the site.

The Český Grand Canyon a Český Mauthausen educational trail is just under three kilometres long and features eleven information panels and interactive elements.
