Sudějov: Hotels and Accommodation
Sudějov is situated in a picturesque landscape of forests and fields. The spring in Sudějov was attributed miraculous properties from an early date; Sudějov owes its origin and name to it.
Spiritual Life
Pilgrims and visitors can attend Mass in St. Anne’s Church every Saturday at 6 p.m. Every year on 26 July, the pilgrimage site in Sudějov hosts a well-attended pilgrimage festival in honour of Saint Anne. The revived St. Anne’s Pilgrimage in Sudějov is attended by several hundred people every year.
Architecture and Furnishings
St. Anne’s Church is a single-nave building with a three-sided, set-back presbytery. The Baroque pilgrimage church of St. Anne was built from 1724 onwards and consecrated the following year. The pilgrimage complex surrounding the church was completed in 1742 with covered walkways, towers and chapels.
The pilgrimage complex includes a Lourdes grotto with a statue of the Virgin Mary. The chapels at the pilgrimage site in Sudějov were decorated by the renowned Czech painter Václav Kramolín. The vault of the St. James Chapel bears a painting depicting the liberation of Vienna from the Turks by Jan Sobieski in 1683. The first chapel in the Sudějov pilgrimage complex is decorated with a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, while the third chapel is dedicated to the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
History and Spring
A small exhibition about the origins and history of this pilgrimage site can be visited in the reconstructed Baroque parish house opposite the church. In 1843, the water from the spring was piped to the village square in front of the church, into a separate chapel freely accessible to the public.
