Culture and History

The free-standing, masonry Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes stands at a road junction and is surrounded by mature trees. Near the chapel is a spring known as the “Miracle Well”, which provides water even during times of the greatest drought; it is also surrounded by remarkable, protected linden trees.

Mžany and the associated settlements of Stračovská Lhota and Dub are located in the landscape where the Prussian-Austrian War of 1866 reached its climax. The first artillery salvoes of the 1866 battle were fired from Dubský hájek between Dub and Stračovská Lhota. In the centre of Mžany stands a large monument to the victims of both world wars. A monument to the victims of the 1866 war stands in the southwest of the Mžany settlement, while the grave of the Prussian soldier Michalaz is located east of Mžany.

Landscape

The restoration of the orchard avenue historically known in Mžany as Třešňovka was completed on 24 October 2015. Třešňovka runs above Mžany along a side road lined mainly with cherry trees.

In the immediate vicinity of Mžany are Sobětušský bor Hill [Nechanice-Sobětuš], Babylon Hill [Třesovice], the hill (Na příbytkách) [Všestary-Lípa], and Svíb Hill [Máslojedy]. In the wider regional surroundings of Mžany lies the Church of Svatý Jiří.

Local Character

Pivovar Lindr Mžany produces all its beers on site, using Czech malt, Saaz hops, and selected brewing yeast. It was established with the aim of reviving and preserving rural living traditions; the extensive reconstruction of the dilapidated building led to the completion of the current brewery in 2014.
