Smiřice: Hotels and Accommodation
The chapel in the Smiřice chateau grounds is a European High Baroque building. By a government regulation of the Czech Republic dated 16 August 1995, it was declared a national cultural monument.
Culture and History
The SmiÅ™ice fortress was first mentioned in 1392. In the 16th century, the original fortress was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and incorporated into the east wing of the present chateau. After 1661, AntonÃn Pankrác Galas had the fortress rebuilt as an early Baroque chateau; the outbuildings were completed in 1687.
Nature and Landscape
Smiřice lies on the plain along the upper Elbe. Near Smiřice, the Elbe once divided into at least three branches. Frequent floods brought sand, gravel and fertile reddish soil to the surrounding area.
The landscape around Smiřice also used to have a marshy character. It included floodplain forests that were still present in the second half of the 19th century.
East of Smiřice lies the Obora Biocentre, situated on the reclaimed site of a former gravel and sand pit. It is divided into an ecological zone and a recreational zone; a footbridge forms the boundary at the main body of water. The Obora Biocentre includes wetland biotopes as well as habitats for thermophilic insect communities.
The chateau park in Smiřice is considered a collection of dendrological exotics that are not common in local parks.
Things to Do
At Plivátky, the educational trail includes an insect hotel, beetle lodges (log piles), the „Ježek“ feature as winter quarters for vertebrates, part of the „Vrbová Galerie“, two benches and a flower meadow. The educational trail at Plivátky is a footpath between the Obora Biocentre and the Elbe that symbolically imitates a meandering river course.
The 26-kilometre easy cycle route from Hradec Králové to Kuks leads to the chateau park in Smiřice. It is suitable for standard bicycles and can easily be ridden with a child trailer.
