Vysoké Veselí: Hotels and accommodations

Vysoké Veselí can be explored via a specific educational trail and an unusually dense succession of historical and natural features. The trail leads via Kákovice, Veselský háj, Velešice, Sběř and Kozojedy to Češov and back via Volanice. Including its branches, it is 18.6 kilometres long and is suitable for hikers and cyclists, including those riding trekking, cross or mountain bikes.

Trail and landscape

Veselský háj is protected as a nature monument. Its valuable habitats include oak-hornbeam forests and old acidic oak forests with pedunculate oaks (Quercus robur). The nature monument also contains Smrkovák Pond, which is considered an important ornithological area.

The nature monument provides suitable conditions for highly endangered plants such as the superb pink (Dianthus superbus L. s.s.) and the Siberian iris (Iris sibirica). Other specially protected species also occur here, including the variegated monkshood (Aconitum variegatum) and the violet helleborine (Epipactis purpurata).

Culture and history

The first written mention of the Church of St Nicholas of Tolentino in Vysoké Veselí dates from 1335. Its present form derives from a Baroque church built in 1770, which was later rebuilt in the Empire style after a fire. The oldest house in the village is a large multi-storey Renaissance house with an arcaded gallery, dating from 1586.

A sandstone pillar with a Pietà stands in the village square beside a main road. The Pietà on it is an unsigned sculpture from 1808. The Pietà pillar is one of the sculptures regarded as valuable evidence of the survival of Baroque forms in rural settings until the beginning of the 19th century.

Another sandstone pillar with a statue of Saint Wenceslas stands on the road to the château. The statue on the Wenceslas pillar is an unsigned sculpture from 1807. The original fortress was converted after 1745 into a Baroque château, now modernised; a garden was created on the sites of the fortifications.

Events and information

The Vackovo Vysoké Veselí concert traditionally takes place at the end of June. It presents leading artists from the field of brass music. The local public library is Vysoké Veselí’s cultural information centre.
