Staré Smrkovice: Hotels and Accommodation

Staré Smrkovice is located on the site of a former fortress, for which written records date back to 1347. At the site of the former fortress on the edge of the present-day village of Staré Smrkovice, remnants of the ditches can still be seen; however, no structural remains have survived.

History

The former fortress stood on the right bank of the Javorka; its defensive embankments, which are still documented today, were supplied with water from the river. The school in Staré Smrkovice was built in 1861.

Nature

The European Site of Community Importance “Javorka a Cidlina - Sběř” includes a section of the river in Staré Smrkovice. The site is a habitat of the dusky large blue butterfly (Maculinea nausithous) and the depressed river mussel (Unio crassus).

In the “Javorka a Cidlina - Sběř” site, part of the population of the depressed river mussel was relocated to the Javorka river channel near Staré Smrkovice. The main channel is partly regulated and partly close to its natural state; the surrounding area consists of extensively managed wet meadows.

The local village pub in Staré Smrkovice offers short-term rental of its adjoining rooms and hall. Kittlerův mlýn is an inaccessible mill in Staré Smrkovice on the Javorka watercourse.

Culture

At the historic “Cikoria” company plant in Staré Smrkovice, 3,404 q of chicory and 234 q of sugar beet were dried. The historic local craft tradition in Staré Smrkovice included three basket makers.

A chicory-drying plant, also referred to as a chicory coffee roasting plant, still stands in Staré Smrkovice.

At the “Farewell to the Summer Holidays” event in Staré Smrkovice, entertaining competitions involving games and physical activities were planned for children.
