Borovnice U Staré Paky: Hotels and Accommodations

Borovnice U Staré Paky is characterized by a vast mountain panorama and tangible traces of regional history. The settlement of Horka u Staré Paky is situated on Horka Hill at an elevation of 503 meters above sea level and offers an unobstructed view of the panorama of the entire Krkonoše Mountains.

Landscape

The Nedařížský stream flows through Horka u Staré Paky. A green-marked hiking trail to the Kozinec lookout tower begins at Horka u Staré Paky railway station and leads via a paved turnoff to the viewpoint. The viewing platform of the nearby Kozinec lookout tower is located at a height of 33 meters. From there, views extend over the Krkonoše Mountains, the Bohemian Paradise, the Orlické Mountains, and Mount Zvičina.

Nature and Geology

The Vidochov–Zlatnice quarry between Vidochov and Horka u Staré Paky can be reached by car without access restrictions; the access road comes within 250 meters of the site. Gray volcanic breccia, blocks of vesicular lava, and veins of jasper are exposed in the quarry.

Specimens from Horka u Staré Paky are also represented in the geological collection of the Krkonoše Museum: it includes samples of araucaria stone from sites in Horka u Staré Paky.

History and Culture

Formanka, an inn with large stables, was the first building in the settlement. Berger's chicory was produced in Horka and was considered a product of the highest quality throughout Austria. In Horka u Staré Paky, the entire complex of railway station buildings, including the former locomotive shed, has also been preserved.

The former German primary school in Nedaříž was built in 1881 and remodeled in 1886. The school remained a German school until 1945. In 2024, the former school building in Nedaříž housed a municipal cultural hall. The Nedaříž Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded in 1902.

Transport

Roads I/16 toward Nová Paka and Trutnov and II/293 toward Jilemnice run through the municipality. Horka railway station was opened for public transport on May 31, 1858, when the section from Jaroměř was opened. After the line entered service, Horka station became one of the most important stations, as trade from the entire Podkrkonoší region as well as from the Jičín and Nová Paka regions was concentrated there, also thanks to the roads running through the municipality.
