In nationwide Czech comparisons, the so-called Lower Château of Velký Valtinov ranks among the most valuable complexes of the smaller noble residences. The complex is located in the southern part of Velký Valtinov, on an elevated terrace above the Panenský stream. Following the 1983 fire, the Lower Château of Velký Valtinov is in a dilapidated condition and is not open to the public.
History and Sacred Architecture
The construction of Tlustec Fortress is dated to the second half of the 14th century. After the fortress lost its original function, it was converted into a granary in the 18th century. A small manor house was built in Horní Valtinov in 1578.
The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk was built on the road to the château in 1729. It is an octagonal Baroque building with sandstone windows and a sandstone portal bearing the coat of arms of the Pachta von Rájov family. A rare illusionistic altarpiece was discovered during restoration in 1997. In front of the church there is also a Calvary group consisting of five statues of saints.
Routes through the Town
The 30 km circular route Okolo Tlusce passes through Velký Valtinov. A green-marked hiking trail maintained by the KČT also runs through the town.
