Liptaň combines distinctive religious buildings and a historic event with viewpoints, a narrow-gauge railway tradition, as well as mountains, ruins and a castle in the wider regional surroundings. This creates a townscape where local history and the landscape of Osoblažsko meet.

Culture and history

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a monumental Neo-Gothic religious building constructed between 1866 and 1870. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 3 May 1958. The Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Liptaň is a rural religious building made of rubble stone, with elements of late Baroque architecture dating from the first half of the 19th century.

Another historical reference is the Liptaň tragedy. It took place on 22 September 1938 in the former gendarmerie station at house no. 261; six Czech members of the State Defence Guard were murdered there.

The Osoblaha narrow-gauge railway is also part of the region's history. It was completed in 1898; on 14 December 1898, the first scheduled train reached Osoblaha.

Viewpoint north of Liptaň

The Strážiště lookout tower is located about 1.5 kilometres north of Liptaň and is signposted from the town. Another lookout tower of the same name is located on the summit of Strážnice, also north of Liptaň. From there, the view extends across the northern and eastern parts of the Osoblažsko region, over the Polish lowlands with Prudnik and Opole, and westwards to the ridges of the Hrubý Jeseník, including Praděd.
