Suchdol Nad Odrou: Hotels and Accommodation

A particularly tangible way to experience Suchdol nad Odrou is to visit the Museum of the Moravian Brethren: it is housed in a preserved small farmstead in the Kravařsko region, with an enclosed courtyard, a residential building on the right, and farm buildings on the left. Visitors can see how people lived and worked in Kravařsko a hundred years ago.

Culture

The Museum of the Moravian Brethren covers the 18th-century exile of 280 residents of Suchdol nad Odrou to Herrnhut in Saxony, where they renewed the Unity of the Brethren and founded mission settlements in all parts of the world. The Western exhibition is dedicated to Bohumil Kašpárek, known as “Hospodář,” and to the history of the Czechoslovak Pony Express. The military history exhibition focuses on the investigation of aircraft crashes in North Moravia and Silesia, particularly those from the aerial battle of 17 December 1944.

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a single-nave late Renaissance building constructed between 1605 and 1614, with an artistically designed Baroque tower roof and a double finial sphere. The Protestant Church was built between 1852 and 1858 under Senior Szepessy in the arcade style, based on a design by the Viennese architect Förster. Its interior furnishings, including the altar, pulpit, organ, and baptismal font, have been preserved in their original style. The Baroque Catholic parish house was built in 1730 according to a design by the Viennese architect J. L. Hildebrandt from 1730.

History and Tradition

The exhibition on the history of the market town at the town museum covers the region’s prehistory and first settlement, the Middle Ages and the founding of Suchdol nad Odrou and the village district of Kletné, galena mining, the Teltschik family of judges, the economic development of the originally agricultural community, railway construction, industrial development, and the history of the market town up to 1945, including notable local residents.

Visits to the town museum must be arranged in advance and last approximately 60 minutes. The annual Czechoslovak Pony Express ride is part of Suchdol nad Odrou’s local tradition.

Nature

Part of the cadastral area of Suchdol nad Odrou lies within the Poodří Protected Landscape Area; with a little care and attentiveness, unique plant communities and rare animal species can be observed there.

The surroundings of Kletné are suitable for relaxation and pleasant walks; visitors can see the remains of former ore mining and enjoy views over the valley of the Moravian Gate.

The Oder is navigable year-round from Suchdol nad Odrou. The “Through the Floodplain Landscape” educational trail runs across meadows and unpaved paths and can be used on foot or by bicycle, and also on cross-country skis when snow conditions are suitable.

Transport

Suchdol nad Odrou is an important railway junction on the main Přerov–Bohumín line; trains depart from there in five directions.
