Pivín: Hotels and Accommodation

In the centre of Pivín stands the Church of St George. It is a single-nave Baroque church, also a Marian pilgrimage site and an immovable cultural monument; remnants of its former surrounding wall have been preserved in fragments.

History and Traditions

The high altar features an altarpiece of Saint George created by the important Olomouc painter Josef Handke. The Pivín image of the Virgin Mary was donated to the church on 8 October 1745 and placed above the tabernacle in 1753.

Historically, processions to Our Lady of Pivín took place from spring to autumn; 8 September became established as the most important and later the only Pivín pilgrimage. Traditions in Pivín include Ostatky, featuring a masked procession through the village and the burial of the double bass; the burning of witches in April; the erection and felling of the maypole in May; and the traditional Domlácená in August.

Nature

Skalka–písky is a former sandstone quarry in Lower Badenian sediments. The geological site displays an unusual sequence of Lower Badenian sediments and is a geotourism attraction as well as an excursion site. It is also located in the cadastral area of Pivín and can be reached from the road via an accessible tourist trail.

On the Way

The marked cycle route No. 5013 leads from the direction of Skalka to Pivín. It is classified as moderately difficult, runs along Class II and Class III roads, and has an asphalt surface.

The Pivín–Skalka educational trail comprises eight information boards about the history of the municipalities, the surrounding nature, and the spa towns. It was ceremonially opened in August 2019.
